Two machinists can have five years of MCT experience and do very different work
Consider two applicants who both list five years on CNC machining centers. One has mainly operated equipment using supplied NC programs. The other has interpreted drawings, built CAM toolpaths, selected tools, set up the job and corrected errors after measuring the first piece.
Both may be valuable specialists. Their fit depends on which parts of the process the employer needs them to perform. Years of experience and the word 'MCT' do not resolve that difference.
Three Korean job ads make the point tangible: Seil Precision advertised machining work involving CNC and five-axis equipment with no experience minimum, Mission Core Tech asked for CAM and setup skills with at least three years, and Namyang Precision described five-axis programming and inspection with at least five years.
A five-axis machine does not always mean a five-axis programmer is being recruited
Seil Precision's September 30 listing covers CNC milling and machining-center operations. It is open to applicants regardless of experience, while identifying MCT, CNC and five-axis machining from work instructions and engineering drawings. Prior NC work, CAD/CAM and HYPER MILL are preferred, not universal prerequisites.
Using a five-axis machine under a known program is not necessarily the same assignment as creating and proving a new five-axis toolpath independently. Machine operation, setup assistance, program adjustment and original programming can be distinct responsibilities.
Equally, describing an entry-level listing as mere 'button pressing' would be misleading. A hiring manager still needs to establish the equipment, training and work that new staff are expected to handle.
Mission Core Tech explicitly combines MCT operation with CAM and process improvement
Mission Core Tech's vacancy asks for at least three years of experience. It lists precision components for semiconductor and industrial machinery, machine setup and operation, CAM program creation and revision, and process improvements aimed at productivity.
It calls out Mastercam X and the ability to operate specified MCT machines, while seeking applicants familiar with precision parts and related industries.
A software name on a résumé is not enough to demonstrate job ownership. Did the candidate edit existing toolpaths or create them from drawings? Did they validate the resulting program on a machine? Can they explain a change that improved yield, precision or cycle time?
Namyang Precision specifies five-axis programming and measurement, not just equipment use
Namyang Precision's October 2 vacancy in Busan requires at least five years of experience. It describes preparing, writing and checking CNC milling CAM programs; preparing and operating machines; measuring and inspecting machined parts; and developing five-axis programs.
These statements show that the role includes programming and output verification. A machine completing a cycle does not mean the part necessarily meets tolerances, surface or dimensional requirements.
The posting does not establish that one employee must own every step alone. Interviewers still need to confirm who signs off first articles, performs corrections and coordinates with quality teams.
What matters is the extent of process ownership
A machining workflow may involve drawing interpretation, work planning, tool selection, NC programming, CAM generation, machine setup, operation, inspection and corrective action. Korea's National Competency Standards (NCS) treats CNC milling operation, machining programming, CAM programming and five-axis programming as distinguishable units.
Large production operations may allocate these steps to separate specialists, whereas high-mix and low-volume shops may combine them. Neither structure is universally superior.
The starting point for hiring is not the longest possible list of technologies. It is which steps the incoming employee needs to handle without supervision and which can be taught or supported.
KRW 30m, 50m and 60m are not a skills-based salary ladder
Seil Precision listed a salary floor of KRW 30 million; Mission Core Tech, KRW 50 million; and Namyang Precision, KRW 60 million. These are three vacancies, not a matched-wage study.
Working conditions differ. Seil describes a regular 08:00–16:30 day with irregular overtime, Mission Core Tech lists overtime until 20:00 on several weekdays, and Namyang advertises days running to 20:00 except Wednesday. Locations, incentives, industrial products and other pay conditions also vary.
Consequently, the postings cannot establish that machine operators 'cost 30m', CAM specialists 'cost 50m' and five-axis programmers 'cost 60m'. Their real comparative value is the variation in job scope and working terms.
Flat industry employment does not imply identical demand for every skill
Korea's official second-half 2026 outlook classifies metal fabrication employment as broadly stable, despite forecasting a 0.3% year-on-year decline, or roughly 1,000 positions.
A separate employer survey says 25.8% of the reported reasons for unfilled vacancies involved the absence of applicants with the required experience. That percentage covers the broader surveyed employer population; it is not an MCT-specific shortage rate.
These sources should not be combined into a made-up shortage statistic. They do illustrate that overall industry employment and the demand for particular kinds of experience are different questions.
Four questions to ask before publishing an MCT job description
First, is the hire expected to operate an established NC process or generate new CAM programs? Second, what machines, materials, dimensions, tolerances and production mix matter for the work?
Third, which parts of program modification, setup, first-part inspection and root-cause correction must the employee perform independently? Fourth, what must be demonstrated before hiring and what can be learned through internal training?
If a programmer already supports the production line, independent CAM authorship may be unnecessary for an operations role. If nobody owns new-product process preparation, years of routine machine operation might not close the gap.
A candidate's evidence should be more specific than years and software names
An applicant who lists seven years of MCT, Mastercam and five-axis experience may still leave the important questions unanswered. Naming materials, part types, machines, the level of program authorship, setup decisions and inspection duties makes experience more legible.
Distinguish modifying an existing program from writing an original one, and supervised setup from independent process preparation. Precision is better than exaggeration.
Employers can learn more by asking applicants to reconstruct one technical problem they personally solved—from constraints to inspection results—without requesting confidential customer drawings or proprietary programs.
BANSEOG VIEW | 'Five years in machining' is not a complete capability definition
Across three real vacancies, five-axis equipment may appear in a no-experience listing, another role may call for Mastercam and improvement work, and a third may require five-axis programming and measurement.
The lesson is not that one role or person is intrinsically superior. It is that the work problem, division of responsibilities and independently demonstrated experience need to match.
Sometimes a supposedly unavailable candidate is not the only obstacle. A company may not yet have defined the boundaries of the role it is trying to fill.
BANSEOG VIEW
Banseog View — define process responsibility before searching
Three MCT/CNC vacancies describe materially different responsibilities across operation, CAM programming, setup and inspection.
Their advertised KRW 30m–60m salary floors are not comparable estimates of a skill premium because working hours and employer conditions differ.
Hiring criteria should distinguish which machining stages an applicant has performed and which a new hire must own independently.
