Meta created a new business and a new role at the same time

On September 28, Meta introduced Meta Enterprise Platform as the ‘next major pillar’ of its business. The initial focus is turning its technology stack, including Muse, Meta Business Agent, Muse API and Muse Code, into products and services that businesses and developers can deploy.

Meta also created the Chief Enterprise Platform Officer role and hired Chirantan ‘CJ’ Desai, then CEO of MongoDB, to fill it. Desai reports directly to Mark Zuckerberg.

This is not simply an executive added to an existing org chart. The business unit and the accountability role were created together.

Meta's missing capability was not simply a better AI model

Meta already has advanced models, agents, large-scale infrastructure and relationships with a vast business customer base.

Enterprise AI creates a different operating problem: security, governance, integration, deployment, procurement, partner ecosystems, enterprise sales, support and account expansion.

The challenge is converting AI technology into something enterprises can buy, implement and scale, not merely demonstrating that the model works.

Desai's career maps closely to that operating problem

Meta highlighted Desai's full-stack software experience across AI, infrastructure, business applications and security, plus his enterprise network.

He spent nearly eight years at ServiceNow, rising to President and COO, later led product and engineering at Cloudflare, and became MongoDB CEO in November 2025.

When MongoDB appointed him, the company said its CEO search targeted deep experience in cloud infrastructure, AI, enterprise software and product innovation. Meta's hire therefore looks like an acquisition of enterprise operating experience rather than a single technical specialty.

For new-business search, the problem and role can come before the candidate

Senior hiring often starts with the question ‘who is the best person?’ But for a new business, the more useful sequence can begin by defining what operating problem must be solved.

That leads to Operating Model, Role, Capability, the Talent Market where that capability exists, and only then the Candidate.

The sequence is Problem → Operating Model → Role → Capability → Talent Market → Candidate. Meta defined the new business and role first, then recruited a sitting CEO with experience across the relevant enterprise markets.

The same move created a leadership-continuity problem at MongoDB

MongoDB announced Desai's immediate departure and brought former CEO Dev Ittycheria back as interim President and CEO. The board started a permanent CEO search and retained an executive search firm.

Ittycheria led MongoDB from 2014 through 2025. MongoDB says annual revenue grew from roughly $35 million to more than $2.3 billion during his tenure.

Reuters reported that MongoDB shares fell about 18% intraday after the move was announced. That does not prove Desai represented all of MongoDB's capability, but it shows how an unexpected CEO transition can create immediate leadership uncertainty.

One person's move can create a capability gain and a capability gap at the same time

For Meta, Desai is capability acquisition for a new enterprise AI business. For MongoDB, the same move creates a continuity problem around the CEO role and the next leadership search.

Organizational capability is larger than one executive. MongoDB's products, engineering organization, sales team and customers did not move with Desai.

Still, CEO-level leaders influence capital allocation, organization design, senior hiring, product-market priorities and major customer relationships, so their moves can have a wider effect than ordinary headcount changes.

The people move and product direction point the same way: turning AI technology into enterprise business is becoming a distinct operating challenge.

The useful senior-search question is therefore not simply who is famous or available, but which capability the next business requires and which industries have already produced people who know how to operate it.
