Data centers, semiconductor facilities and NewEnergy now appear as distinct graduate recruiting areas
Samsung C&T's 2026 second-half graduate recruitment lists Plant/Energy, Data Center/Office Building, Housing, Semiconductor Production Facilities, Civil and Safety as separate areas. Data Center/Office Building and Semiconductor Facilities each recruit architecture, mechanical and electrical/electronic backgrounds.
Hyundai E&C's graduate recruitment similarly places NewEnergy alongside Civil, Building/Housing and Plant. NewEnergy accepts nuclear, mechanical, chemical, electrical/electronic, civil and architectural engineering majors.
Two companies cannot define the entire construction labor market. But their current public recruiting structures do show which facility and energy-infrastructure categories are visible at the graduate-entry level.
The same 'construction company job' can create very different experience
An electrical-engineering graduate might work on residential electrical systems, data-center power and backup systems, or electrical scope in a nuclear EPC project.
The employer name may initially be the same on a resume, but the evidence available several years later can differ: power density, reliability requirements, equipment, permitting, quality and commissioning exposure are not interchangeable.
That makes the initial business and facility type another career variable alongside employer brand.
Hyundai E&C's NewEnergy label is backed by an actual project pipeline
In August 2026, Hyundai E&C signed a strategic framework agreement with TerraPower to support commercial deployment of the Natrium reactor.
TerraPower said it selected Hyundai E&C as EPC contractor for up to eight future Natrium reactors. Hyundai E&C separately described itself as securing preferred EPC-partner status for up to eight follow-on units after Kemmerer Unit 1.
The NewEnergy hiring category therefore sits alongside a concrete international nuclear-project pipeline, not only a future-business label.
Why old engineering disciplines matter again in an AI infrastructure cycle
Hyundai E&C said it would actively recruit MEP—mechanical, electrical and plumbing—talent to strengthen execution in core growth businesses.
A data center does not run on GPUs alone. Power, cooling, piping, backup systems, fire protection, structures and commissioning must work together. Nuclear and SMR projects likewise require mechanical, electrical, civil, architectural, quality and EPC capability beyond reactor technology itself.
As AI and power demand rise, labor-market change is therefore not limited to new AI job titles. Established engineering capabilities can be repriced when they become critical inputs to new infrastructure.
At Samsung C&T, the facility type can matter as much as the degree title
Samsung C&T recruits architecture, mechanical and electrical/electronic graduates into both Data Center/Office Building and Semiconductor Production Facilities.
But residential buildings, data centers and semiconductor fabs do not present identical engineering problems. Power, HVAC, cleanroom conditions, reliability, continuous operation and quality requirements differ.
For engineering candidates, the useful question is not only whether a company hires their major, but what industry problem that major will be used to solve.
For Sep. 29 applicants, connect company motivation to the infrastructure problem
Hyundai E&C's NewEnergy graduate application closes at 5:00 p.m. on September 29. The posting describes responsibilities including construction planning and execution, quality management, budgeting, contract management and permitting.
A statement that stops at 'I want to join Hyundai E&C' can therefore be made more specific: why NewEnergy, which infrastructure problem the candidate wants to work on, and how a degree or project experience connects to that responsibility.
The public posting does not reveal evaluation weights. But mechanical candidates can translate equipment, thermal, fluid or piping work, while electrical candidates can translate power, controls or reliability evidence into the language of the role.
BANSEOG VIEW | Choose the first industry as well as the first company
The signal in Samsung C&T and Hyundai E&C hiring is not that construction is disappearing. It is that existing construction capabilities are extending into data centers, semiconductor facilities and nuclear/SMR markets.
Two graduates with the same engineering degree can emerge after three to five years with different market evidence depending on whether their projects were residential, data-center, semiconductor-fab or nuclear.
The career question is therefore becoming two-part: Which company will I join, and which industry's problems will I learn to solve inside that company?

Banseog View — choose the first industry as well as the first company
Samsung C&T separates Data Center/Office Building and Semiconductor Facilities in graduate recruiting, while Hyundai E&C's NewEnergy track accepts six engineering disciplines.
TerraPower's selection of Hyundai E&C as EPC contractor for up to eight future Natrium reactors shows an actual project pipeline behind the NewEnergy label.
Graduates should consider not only employer brand but which infrastructure they will design, build and operate during the first three to five years.
