Giving robots and drones 'eyes that see heat'
Growth — capturing demand from unmanned and autonomous systems with compact thermal modules
- Parent Teledyne had about 15,800 employees in 38 countries as of December 28, 2025 (Form 10-K annual report).
- In the third quarter of 2026, revenue of the Digital Imaging segment, which includes Teledyne FLIR, rose 15.0% to USD 903 million, and operating income rose 48.1% to USD 182.7 million. The company said infrared detectors and subsystems for space and unmanned applications drove the growth.
- More than 4 million Lepton compact thermal modules have been shipped to date. In Korea, the company has a subsidiary, Teledyne FLIR Korea, established in 2008.
Decisions within a year
- Lepton XDS at MWC in February 2026 it launched a product combining a 160×120 radiometric thermal sensor and a 5-megapixel visible-light camera in a single module, aimed at robot navigation, unmanned platforms, EV battery monitoring and fire detection.
- Boson SX8 in June 2026 it released an uncooled long-wave infrared camera module with 8μm pixels and 1280×1024 (SXGA) resolution. It offers four times the resolution of existing VGA-class modules and is made in the US.
- Varex acquisition Teledyne has signed an agreement to acquire Varex Imaging, which makes X-ray tubes and digital detectors used in CT, industrial quality inspection and baggage screening equipment, for about USD 1.1 billion. The deal is expected to close in early 2027.
People they will look for
- OEM thermal module FAEs it needs people to help Korean robot, drone and EV customers with optical and interface integration when building Lepton and Boson modules into their products
- Thermal and visible image fusion engineers — as dual-sensor modules such as Lepton XDS increase, it needs people to handle image registration and calibration in customer equipment
- Industrial thermal imaging technical sales — it needs people to propose cameras and modules to Korean customers in semiconductor fab and power facility inspection and factory automation safety
For hiring managers
Engineers who have integrated thermal and infrared modules into systems are a rare group sought by Korean defense and drone companies, auto parts makers, and the Korean subsidiaries of global sensor companies alike. With the new modules at the early stage of entering customer designs, it is wise to secure FAEs now.
For job seekers
Experience fitting thermal cameras into robots, drones or equipment inspection systems — especially handling optics and embedded image processing together — is what this company values most right now.
