Taking the operator out of the excavator cab
Early commercialization — finished supervised trials and entering fully autonomous site deployment
- Founded in 2024 in San Francisco by engineers from Waymo's self-driving program; co-founder Boris Sofman is CEO. It has raised more than USD 350 million in total.
- As of November 2025 it had carried out supervised autonomous work with several excavator models in the 20–80 ton class, digging more than 65,000 cubic yards at a single site (the Sundt project) alone.
Decisions within a year
- November 18, 2025 it began supervised autonomous trials on real construction sites, expanded its pilot contractors, and set fully autonomous operation in 2026 as its goal.
- February 4, 2026 it raised USD 270 million in a Series B led by CapitalG and the Valor Atreides AI Fund. It said the funds would go toward expanding from single-machine autonomy to operating fleets of connected machines.
- August 17, 2026 after a year of supervised trials, it began deploying fully autonomous excavators at a Nevada water treatment facility, a large earthmoving project in Texas, and a 1.2-million-cubic-yard civil works site. It uses the Bedrock Operator approach, fitted to existing machines in a single day.
People they will look for
- Autonomous driving perception and planning software engineers — the stage of extending fully autonomous excavation across multiple sites and machine models
- Construction equipment embedded and CAN control engineers — the retrofit kit fitted in a day to a range of excavators in the 20–80 ton class
- Field deployment and quality validation engineers — confirming the safety and quality of autonomous work at real sites such as those in Texas
For hiring managers
In Korea, people who understand both excavator electronics and hydraulic control and autonomous driving software are sought at once by construction machinery makers, autonomous driving startups and automaker research centers. The headquarters and sites are in the US, so for Korean talent a US posting is a prerequisite.
For job seekers
Experience adding CAN-based controls and sensors to construction or agricultural machinery, and hands-on autonomous driving work on real vehicles with ROS and C++, are what this company values most right now.
