BANSEOG OUTLOOK

Raion Robotics does not add battery. It hunts down the energy that leaks away

Raion Robotics is a four-legged robot company spun out of the KAIST lab of Professor Jemin Hwangbo in 2023. Its decisions have pointed the same way for years. In 2024 it said it had reworked gear ratios and built its own motors and controllers, cutting energy use by about 20 to 50 percent. That November, Raibo2 finished the full Sangju marathon in 4 hours 19 minutes 52 seconds without changing its battery. The research, published in Nature in September 2026, describes reducing losses across mechanics, electronics, actuation and control rather than fitting a bigger battery. The company has developed even its motor drivers in-house and, promoting 8-hour operation, had delivered 11 robots by November 2025, mainly to defense firms and research institutes. Banseog reads its habit as keeping the entire path where energy leaks in its own hands, not just one part. That is why the next challenge looks like reproducing lab-tuned efficiency on every production unit.

Banseog analysis
The next company challengeMeet field reliability demands such as water, dust, shock and electromagnetic interference while reproducing, on every production robot, the energy efficiency that was tuned one unit at a time in the lab.
Questions before joining
  1. Is actuator efficiency measured unit by unit at shipment?
  2. After a research design becomes a production design, how is running time verified?
  3. When waterproof design and efficiency goals conflict, who decides?
Building productionMeasuring one robot's efficiency again on a hundred

The company has said Series A funds will go to a production system. Part variation may turn directly into differences in running time, so moving efficiency into process standards may become important.

Adding field conditionsThe efficiency that sealing consumes

Water and dust protection, wide temperature ranges and electromagnetic compatibility are reported tasks. Seals and protective structures can add weight and friction, so roles designing reliability and efficiency together may become important.

Building out mission softwareThe work that rides on a walking robot

The CEO has named application software as a task and described mountain path autonomy as an area in development. As missions such as patrol or inspection become concrete, sensor modularity and mission software roles may grow. These are conditional stages, not confirmed dates or hiring plans.

Questions before joining

  1. Is actuator efficiency measured unit by unit at shipment?
  2. After a research design becomes a production design, how is running time verified?
  3. When waterproof design and efficiency goals conflict, who decides?
  4. How do the locomotion and actuator teams share loss data?
  5. Does this role sit in actuators, electronics, control or mission software, and where is it based?

Measuring loss → joint design of actuators, electronics and control → running time → long-mission customers → field conditions → the next loss measurement

WATCH NEXT

How to test this outlook

If the company buys actuators and drivers from outside and shifts its weight to software differentiation, revise this reading to prioritize mission software over the habit of holding the whole loss path.

Banseog analysis
01Is production unit running time published at the level of the research results?
02Is there news of field certification such as water and dust protection?
03Do trial customers lead to formal adoption?
04Is there any move to supply actuators or drivers to others?
05Do production quality or reliability roles appear in job postings?
