E-Mart — Keeping its store count while changing what its stores are for

Where it stands now
Core business reset — reshaping hypermarkets into stay-longer stores and warehouse stores

In 2025, consolidated revenue was KRW 28.97 trillion (−0.2%) and operating profit KRW 322.5 billion (KRW 47.1 billion the previous year); separate operating profit was KRW 277.1 billion (+127.5%). Separate operating profit rose to KRW 25.6 billion in Q2 2026, but Starbucks (SCK Company) lost KRW 18.4 billion, leaving a consolidated operating loss of KRW 43 billion.

On Korea's National Pension Service public workplace data, 21,585 people were on the pension register in August 2026, 628 fewer (−2.8%) than in October 2025. Since the merger with Emart Everyday in June 2024, staff at Traders, No Brand and Everyday are included in this figure, while Starbucks, emart24 and SSG.COM are separate entities and are excluded.

Three decisions within a year
  1. Conversion to Starfield Market: at the March 2026 AGM it announced six store conversions within the year. The Wolgye (August 27) and Gunsan (September) stores became the fifth and sixth, and the Gwangmyeong Soha store is due to convert in December. Revenue at stores renovated in the first half rose about 13%.
  2. Traders: 2025 revenue was KRW 3.852 trillion (+8.5%) and operating profit KRW 129.3 billion (+39.9%), exceeding KRW 100 billion for the first time. Following Magok (2025-02) and Guwol (2025-09), it opens the Uijeongbu store at the end of 2026.
  3. No Brand and overseas: in July 2026 it signed an agreement with a local partner in Mongolia and opened a No Brand specialty store, aiming for 15 by 2028. At the AGM it announced 20% overseas revenue growth and entry into new countries, and it is expanding the quick-commerce service Baro Quick from 80 to 90 locations.
Three people it will look for
  1. Store renovation and space planning, F&B and tenant recruitment — converting hypermarkets into Starfield Market continues through year-end
  2. Traders store opening and operations managers — opening the Uijeongbu store and expanding warehouse stores
  3. Overseas business and master franchise management — No Brand in Mongolia and Laos, and new entry countries
For HR
Headcount is falling little by little, but the work stores do is changing. It is best to plan both retraining existing store staff toward running renovated stores and bringing in space planning and F&B experience from outside.
For job seekers
Experience with large-store renovation, running tenant stores in shopping malls, or opening warehouse discount stores fits E-Mart's next year.
