GS Retail — Neighborhood retail that chooses profit over size
- Where it stands now
- Restructuring — raising convenience store and supermarket profitability while disposing of non-core assets
In Q2 2026, consolidated revenue was KRW 3.1751 trillion (+6.7%) and operating profit KRW 109.4 billion (+27.5%). GS25 posted revenue of KRW 2.3844 trillion (+7.1%) and operating profit of KRW 71.4 billion (+21%).
GS THE FRESH posted Q2 revenue of KRW 469.8 billion (+10.1%) and operating profit of KRW 9.3 billion (+72.2%). It has 596 stores, 36 more than a year earlier, and quick-commerce revenue rose 49.5%.
On Korea's National Pension Service public workplace data, GS Retail had 5,388 people on the pension register in August 2026. That is 180 fewer (3.2%) than in October 2025; in the meantime 1,090 people joined and 1,263 left.
- Three decisions within a year
- Corporate value-up plan (August 2026): it set a target of KRW 380 billion in operating profit for 2028. It will raise asset efficiency by selling non-core equity holdings and funds and monetizing the assets of inefficient stores.
- Direction by business: GS25 will expand fresh-focused stores, differentiated private brands and global business; GS THE FRESH will expand strategic store openings and products tailored to each trade area; and company-wide it will broaden AI transformation and data-driven operations.
- GS25 overseas expansion: as of June 2026 it had 742 overseas stores (443 in Vietnam, 299 in Mongolia), and it aims for its 1,000th overseas store in 2027.
- Three people it will look for
- Fresh and private-brand product planners — expanding fresh-focused stores and differentiated private brands is at the center of the convenience store growth plan
- Data and AI transformation operations leaders — it has said it will use data to lift store operating efficiency and home shopping personalization
- Overseas convenience store business development — it must grow from 742 stores in Vietnam and Mongolia to its 1,000th store in 2027
- For HR
- BGF Retail (CU), hypermarkets and quick-commerce companies vie for the same people, with fresh product MDs and data operations staff overlapping in particular. Execution toward the 2028 target starts now, so it is best to secure product and data leaders within this year.
- For job seekers
- Experience planning fresh food or private brands at a convenience store or supermarket and changing sales as a result, and improving operating efficiency with store data, is worth the most at this company right now.
