Oasis Market — a grocery company that chose profit over revenue
- Where it stands now
- Strengthening fundamentals — stepping back from the race for scale and growing profit through private labels, direct sourcing and partner channels
Second-quarter 2026 revenue fell 8% to KRW 137.1 billion, but operating profit rose 95.5% to KRW 6.95 billion. First-half operating profit was KRW 15.2 billion (+55.3%), with an operating margin of 5.5%.
By increasing private labels and direct sourcing, the company lowered its cost-of-sales ratio by 3.50 percentage points from 70.54% a year earlier, and cut selling, general and administrative expenses by 5.1%.
According to Korea's National Pension Service public workplace data, the number of people on the pension register was 792 in August 2026, down 119 (13.1%) from October 2025. In that period 299 people joined and 410 left, as the workforce was adjusted in line with operational efficiency.
- Three decisions within a year
- Toss partnership: an 'Oasis Market dedicated store' opened inside Toss Shopping and began selling fresh food, and Viva Republica, the operator of Toss, is set to acquire a 2.3% stake in Oasis through a rights offering of about KRW 30.0 billion.
- Overseas direct sourcing trial: under the name of the TMON entity acquired in 2025 (now May Oasis), the company directly imports Italian canned tuna and sells it at Oasis Market, and is considering importing more overseas products.
- Wider rollout of the AI self-checkout 'Root': currently in operation at seven stores, it will be extended to all stores in turn to cut waiting times and store operating costs.
- Three people it will look for
- Partner commerce and platform business — a new channel for selling inside other platforms, such as the Toss dedicated store, has opened
- Overseas sourcing and import merchandiser — the company wants to increase overseas direct sourcing under the May Oasis name
- Store operations innovation and retail tech — the AI self-checkout is being extended to all stores
- For HR
- Fresh food sourcing merchandisers and retail tech talent are contested with the online teams of hypermarkets and with quick commerce companies. Now that the profit structure has been strengthened while adjusting headcount, it is a good time to fill only the roles that are truly needed.
- For job seekers
- Experience lowering costs through private label development and direct sourcing from producing regions and overseas, and a track record of running platform partner channels, are worth the most at this company right now.
