Coupang — Expanding into Taiwan while dealing with the aftermath of an incident
- Where it stands now
- Recovery — rebuilding trust after a personal data incident while expanding overseas
Coupang, Inc.'s 2025 revenue was USD 34.5 billion (about KRW 49.1197 trillion, +14%) and operating profit USD 473 million. Revenue in Q2 2026 was a record USD 8.856 billion (+4%, +10% at constant currency), but with a KRW 624.7 billion personal data penalty booked, it posted an operating loss of USD 556 million (about KRW 835 billion).
In November 2025 a personal data leak affecting 33.7 million accounts came to light; in December CEO Park Dae-jun stepped down, and Harold Rogers, Chief Administrative Officer of Coupang, Inc., became interim CEO. Compensation takes the form of purchase vouchers worth KRW 50,000 per person, totaling KRW 1.685 trillion.
On Korea's National Pension Service public workplace data, 10,971 people were on the pension register in August 2026, 1,232 fewer (−10.1%) than in October 2025. This is the figure for the single entity Coupang Corp.; fulfillment center (Coupang Fulfillment Services) and delivery (Coupang Logistics Services) staff are in separate entities and are excluded. The reason for the decline at the headquarters entity has not been disclosed.
- Three decisions within a year
- Taiwan: on 2026-03-26 it opened its fourth fulfillment center in Taoyuan, extending Rocket Delivery to about 70% of Taiwan, and raised investment in growth businesses from about KRW 1 trillion to the KRW 1.4 trillion range. Revenue from growth businesses including Taiwan was USD 1.431 billion (+20%) in Q2 2026; central and southern Taiwan come next.
- Domestic logistics: construction of the Jecheon advanced logistics center began on 2025-03-19, targeting operation in the first half of 2027. However, in December 2025 falling volumes led to more than 5,000 unpaid leave applications at the logistics subsidiary CFS.
- Security and trust: in June 2026 it received a KRW 624.7 billion penalty from the Personal Information Protection Commission and pledged a security overhaul including passkeys. With operating losses in both Q1 and Q2, the cumulative first-half loss is about KRW 1.1895 trillion.
- Three people it will look for
- Information security and personal data compliance — overhauling the security framework after the penalty and compensation
- Taiwan business operations and fulfillment launches — expansion into central and southern Taiwan and sourcing from Korean sellers (more than 10,000)
- Logistics automation and center start-up preparation — Jecheon to start operating in the first half of 2027 (the hiring entity may be a logistics subsidiary)
- For HR
- The headquarters entity is shrinking on a net basis, so 'newly added positions' and 'positions that refill vacancies' should be viewed separately. Fill first the positions created by the incident and the expansion, such as security and Taiwan, and make clear from the start which entity, Coupang Corp., CFS or CLS, is hiring.
- For job seekers
- If you have experience in personal data protection and security governance, or in launching overseas e-commerce logistics, it matches Coupang's most urgent tasks right now.
